Overview

In these two weeks, I was taken to New York by this book. It showed me how the Big Apple became the most famous city in the world. A big part of the book focuses on how immigrants influence New York. Take food as an example; there isn't a typical food in New York. People from all over the world have brought their hometown cuisine back to New York. It makes different areas have their own special kinds of food. For instance, you can find pastrami on rye in Washington Heights because of Jewish immigrants. 

Opinion

Before I read this book, I didn't know that the Big Apple is a nickname of New York. The book said it is because of a racing writer, John. J FitzGerald, who named New York in his weekly column. People also believe that by using the name, it can change tourists, image from a dark and dangerous place to a bright and cheery one. By the way, New Yorkers love the name so much that they use an apple as their official state fruit, and even more, apple muffins are the official state muffin!

Favorite Part 

One part was about the famous statue the Statue of Liberty. The statue was shipped in pieces from France, and the earliest part to arrive New York was the arm and torch. Before the whole statue was opened to the public, citizens had already seen part of the arm and torch for about 6 years. It is a very interesting fact, and I had never thought about it since there is no such big statue in Taipei.

Least Favorite Part

The saddest part about New York is that on September 11, 2001, two passenger jets were flown into the twin towers of the world trade centre. Around three thousand people were killed, including 300 firefighters. A memorial was built to remember this event, and next to it is One World Trade Centre. For me, terrorist attacks are always a sad thing as so many families are torn apart by them.
